BIOGRAPHY

Alejandro Román (Madrid, 1971) stands out on the Spanish scene as one of the most outstanding composers of his generation. Critics describe his music as "eclectic, original and very personal", "with great influence from jazz, cinema, contemporary music and pop and rock", a music "with a sound world full of sensuality and elegance". He studied Composition, Instrumentation and Orchestration with Antón García Abril at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and Composition and Arrangements with Eva Gancedo at the Escuela de Música Creativa.

He has taken specialisation courses with Carmelo Bernaola, Giancarlo Simonacci, Adolfo Núñez, Emiliano del Cerro, Leonardo Balada and Jean Claude Risset among others, and has attended various meetings with composers such as Cristóbal Halffter, Joan Guinjoan, Krzysztof Penderecki and Philip Glass.

He has written more than eighty symphonic works, as well as music for film, theatre and dance, having composed the soundtrack for numerous films, including El Perfecto Desconocido, El Enemigo Común, Estándar and La Pasajera. He has worked for directors such as Toni Bestard, Juan Carlos Claver, Zoe Berriatúa, Jaime Otero, Vasileios Papatheocharis, Fernando González and Raúl Cerezo. As an orchestrator he has worked on music productions by Sergio Moure, Óscar Araujo, Pedro Barbadillo and Alejandro Amenábar.

His music has been premiered by prestigious soloists, chamber groups and orchestras, and he has received commissions from different institutions, including the composition of the compulsory work for the 56th International Piano Competition "Premio Jaén". In 2016 the International Piano Competition "Compositores de España" in Las Rozas dedicated its XVII Edition to him, where pianists from all over the world performed his works. His compositions have been performed in Spain, Cuba, Czech Republic, United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, etc., and are released on several CDs for labels such as Naxos, Arlu, Sello Autor, Tañidos, Karonte, etc. and available on digital platforms.

He has received several awards for musical creation, such as the Award for Best Original Soundtrack at the Zaragoza Film Festival and the National Music Award "Cultura Viva". He is a member of the Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas de España, as well as of the association Musimagen, of which he has been president, forming part of the Commission for the elaboration of Suites since its creation.

He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the UNED with a thesis on the analysis of film music, and is a specialist and researcher. He currently combines his artistic activity with his teaching and research work as professor of "Composition for Audiovisual Media" and the Master's Degree in New Technologies in Contemporary Music at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid, professor of the Doctorate Programme "Music and its Science and Technology" at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and professor and director of the Master's Degree in "Technologies in the Composition of Soundtracks and Music for Video Games" at the Complutense University of Madrid. He has also been director of the Master in "Film Music Composition" at the Universidad Alfonso X el Sabio, professor at the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja and at the Centro Superior de Música Creativa.

In 2024 he was elected Academician of the Royal Academy of Doctors of Spain (RADE) in the section of Architecture and Fine Arts.

He is the author of several books, including El lenguaje musivisual, semiotica y estética de la música cinematográfica, Análisis Musivisual, guía de audición y estudio de la música cinematográfica and Composición Musivisual, Guía para la creación de música audiovisual, recently published.
